The San Clemente City Council publicly recognized an off-duty Orange County Fire Authority firefighter and two Orange County Sheriff's Department deputies for life-saving actions during a Dec. 19 medical emergency on the pickleball courts at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park.
Council members read commendations citing off-duty firefighter John Rollins for immediately beginning CPR and deputies Lehi Nunez and Matthew Rudy for deploying an automated external defibrillator and providing advanced life support. The victim, identified in council remarks as Rob, told the council that the responders' actions "kept my blood flowing to my brain and other vital organs" and credited them with saving his life.
Mayor Rick Knobloch and multiple council members thanked the first responders and noted the cooperative response among bystanders, off-duty personnel and emergency services. The council presented framed commendations and invited the family to the dais; several council members and residents urged community members learn CPR in light of the incident.
The council's recognition does not create a policy action but publicly acknowledges the actions of local public-safety personnel and reinforces community appreciation for first-response training and bystander intervention.
