Brookhaven council approves routine minutes, accepts resignations, posts vacancy and buys public-works tractor

Brookhaven Borough Council handled a series of routine governance and procurement items during its February meeting. On motions and voice votes, the council: accepted a resolution to accept $6,615 in county liquid-fuels aid for street resurfacing; approved reorganization meeting minutes for Jan. 5 and council meeting minutes for Jan. 12; accepted the resignation of Councilwoman Sherry Heller and voted to post the council vacancy online with an application cutoff of Feb. 16; approved the February bill list; accepted resignations from the recreation committee (Tom Dykes and Charles Allen) and appointed Jim LaPera to fill an unexpired recreation-committee term through January 2028; and authorized Public Works to purchase a Turo Multiforce tractor from Suburban Lawn Equipment (CoStars vendor) for $16,940.47.

Regarding the county aid, Engineer Catania noted the borough has about $136,000 budgeted for street resurfacing while the preliminary street list carries estimated costs above $500,000; council voted to accept the $6,615 county allocation to supplement local funds. "We have about a $136,000 budgeted," Catania said during the report, adding the full list cost is much higher and that staff will pare the list.

On procurement, Mister Gopelke moved for Public Works to buy the Turo Multiforce tractor at $16,940.47 from Suburban Lawn Equipment; the motion was seconded and approved on a voice vote. The council also approved standard administrative items — minutes and bill lists — and set the process for filling a council vacancy: applicants must be borough residents, registered electors, and have at least one year of residency; the council will fill the vacancy by majority vote to serve the remainder of the term.
