The Nashua Zoning Board of Adjustment on the evening of the meeting approved a special exception to allow a 315-square-foot attached accessory dwelling unit at 11 Burgess Street, an in-law addition the applicant said is intended to house her elderly parents.
Chair Jay McCarthy read the board case into the record, saying the application sought relief under the Land Use Code to permit an accessory dwelling unit. Applicant Kimberly Lewis told the board, "I'm here tonight requesting to add an in law addition to my home," and said the addition would be built off an already-finished basement and "will not change the look of my home."
Supporters at the hearing described the unit as small and unobtrusive; an architect of record, Andrew Kolar, said he attended in a support capacity and was available to answer technical questions. During deliberations, board members described the application as a "relatively straightforward ADU" and noted the signed ADU affidavit and on-site parking. One member said the change would allow "a family to age in place." The board voted to approve the special exception by a 5-0 margin.
The chair told the applicant there is a 30-day window to file an appeal. With the exception approved, the applicant may proceed to apply for the required building permits.
