Balaji Iyengar told the board the new porch would replace existing seven‑foot flower beds and provide a usable outdoor space for sitting and entertaining. “We just plan to sit there, maybe sometimes work from there or entertain,” he said. A neighbor who identified themselves at the hearing spoke in support, saying the porch would be used seasonally for outdoor enjoyment.
Board members questioned why the applicant requested an 8‑ft depth rather than 6‑ft. Robert Shaw and Josh Neely discussed a survey that showed a two‑foot bump‑out on the house’s front elevation; members concluded the final appearance would be compatible with many porches in the neighborhood and would not harm neighbors.
Joseph Pottery moved to approve the variance under land‑use code §190‑25 D1; Robert Shaw seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
