Commission approves $3,600 cultural programming grant for weekly 'Sandusky Sunset Celebration' at the pier

The Sandusky Arts Commission approved a $3,600 reimbursable grant to support a pilot summer event series, ‘‘Sandusky Sunset Celebration,’’ designed to feature a musical act and a performance artist each Wednesday from June 11 through Aug. 27.

Mackenzie Spriggs, working with the Greater Sandusky Partnership, described the proposal as an effort to celebrate the city’s waterfront and provide paid performance opportunities to local artists. Spriggs said the concept was inspired by Key West’s Mallory Square sunset events and would run rain or shine, with artists paid even if scheduled elsewhere.

The proposal asks the commission to cover artist fees (roughly $300 per week) and to reimburse a total of $3,600 after presenters submit invoices. GSP would manage event coordination and marketing; staff recommended approval and requested post-event documentation, including lists of artists paid and high-resolution photos.

Commissioners asked about the exact pier location and whether the existing stage would be used; presenters said they anticipated placing performers near the sunset stairs or the pier’s northwest corner and adjusting placement during the season. Commissioners discussed how the series would differ from larger events (for example, Party at the Pier) and emphasized a ‘‘chill’’ sunset vibe rather than a loud, heavily curated concert.

A motion to approve funding carried in a roll-call vote. Staff confirmed the earlier mural approval was recorded in their recommendation language and clarified the grant process for reimbursement and record-keeping.
