Sunbury updates committee on wastewater-plant expansion and contained electrical fire

City staff gave the Services Committee an update on expansion work at Sunbury’s wastewater treatment plant and on a small electrical fire that occurred during recent activity.
Staff outlined the expansion footprint, including two new aerobic digesters (4 and 5) nearing completion, a tertiary filter building under construction, a new secondary clarifier and an expanded solids-handling facility. The tertiary filters were described as critical to meeting phosphorus limits as the plant’s capacity is increased and as necessary to meet discharge standards to Prairie Run.
Officials reported a small electrical fire in a vault at the sludge transfer lift station that was discovered by construction staff. The fire was contained quickly and "did not result in any permanent damage or any damage that resulted in having to shut the plant down," staff said. A control panel that operated a UV system was damaged; staff said the UV panel is currently offline and certain effluent meter readings will be taken manually until repairs and SCADA upgrades are completed.
Committee members asked about alarms and monitoring; staff said the plant's electrical system is being upgraded with a SCADA monitoring system that will include additional alarms and sensors. Staff said they will confirm whether the specific vault will be instrumented as part of the new system.
No operational interruption affecting discharge compliance was reported; staff said the plant remains fully functioning and that the electrical issue will be addressed as part of the plant improvement project and ongoing construction work.
