Sunbury proposes $20,000 storm-line repair after backyard flooding near reservoir

Nate, a city staff member, said investigation found several collapses and obstructions in an approximately 180-foot stretch of 15-inch concrete storm line that reduced capacity during heavy rain events. Staff recommended repairing the existing segment with PVC, retaining the yard basin to manage low-lying runoff, and completing work before the coming spring to reduce the risk of repeat flooding.
The city previously set aside $75,000 in the capital budget for stormwater work; staff said the contractor proposal for the focused repair is roughly $20,000 — well below the budgeted amount — and that they also solicited a second, higher quote. Staff said this project will be brought to the full council for approval of the proposal and that related larger projects (East Granville Street pipe cleaning tied to the SR 37 widening and Crest Station work, plus an Avenue storm improvement for later design and construction) are planned as part of the 2026–2027 capital program.
Committee members thanked staff for identifying the issue and securing a competitive bid. Staff said they will return to council with the contract recommendation for formal approval.
