The Conway Board of Zoning Adjustment voted Jan. 20 to extend an expired variance permit for a planned fellowship‑hall expansion at 1695 South German Lane.
Planning staff said the original variances (approved by the planning commission June 17, 2024) addressed reduced minimum lot depth, reduced front and rear setbacks and a reduced 25‑foot landscape setback to enable an addition on the south side of the church. Staff noted the site has steep topography and north‑side bedrock that constrained buildable area and that per the ninth condition the variances lapsed if construction had not started within 18 months; the permit expired Dec. 17. The staff report proposed an 18‑month extension with the same conditions as variance O5240067.
Applicant Michael Hampton told the board financial constraints delayed construction and asked for the extension so work could resume. No opposition spoke. A motion to approve the extension was seconded and passed by voice vote.
Staff said the extension repeats the previously approved nine conditions; the applicant also submitted subdivision materials required by one of those conditions. The extension permits the church project to resume the permitting and subdivision steps necessary to begin construction.
