Williamsburg names LaCroix Nixon as inaugural poet laureate

Williamsburg City Council unanimously appointed LaCroix Nixon as the city’s inaugural poet laureate on April 10. The Williamsburg Public Art Council (WPAC) conducted a selection process, interviewed finalists and recommended Nixon for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2025.
WPAC members said Nixon — who grew up in Williamsburg and serves as a regional director of teen programs at the YMCA — brings a background in spoken-word poetry and community arts programming, including work with a nonprofit called Slam Connection. The poet laureate role will include producing at least two original works on behalf of the city, presenting an inaugural poem, partnering with WPAC on a project during the tenure and offering readings at city events.
Council thanked Nixon and WPAC for the selection; Nixon acknowledged the appointment and the council welcomed him to future meetings and community events.
