State law prompts Bedford County to change middle-school math-acceleration policy

Bedford County Public Schools' IGA Committee on Oct. 27 reviewed updates to its math-acceleration policy to comply with a recent state law that changes criteria and parent-notification procedures for middle-school accelerated math enrollment.
Staff said Dr. Prosper and Audrey Bowyer drafted criteria and a notification template so parents will understand why a child qualifies for accelerated math and how to opt out. "Parents have to request for them to be pulled out if they don't want them in that," staff said during the presentation.
Committee members discussed timing and agreed not to implement the new criteria in the current school year because the division had not yet received required accountability information from the state. Staff said they will begin using the new criteria the following year and submit qualifying-student counts to the Virginia Department of Education annually.
The committee had no substantive objections to the legal-update wording and advanced the policy revision for inclusion in board materials. Staff noted they debated whether to start the change immediately but chose to delay until the state-supplied data and guidance were available to avoid applying unclear rules to students mid-year.
Next steps: staff will finalize the regulation and notification materials and present them before implementation begins in the upcoming school year.
