Board approves program of studies, policy updates and upholds a personnel recommendation after closed session

At the Dec. 11 meeting the Bedford County School Board approved the 2026-27 program of studies and several policy updates that the intergovernmental affairs committee reviewed earlier. "Last month, I presented the program of studies for the next school year as an information item," Dr. Prosper told the board; he said only two minor changes (updated board-member names and a fifth board goal) were incorporated before the action vote.

The board also approved revisions to nine policies the committee examined, including policies on management of funds; school crisis and medical emergency response; acceleration; student transfers; drugs in schools; student cell phone use and employee personal electronic communication; student records; and public solicitation. The superintendent said the committee met Oct. 27 to review the proposals before presenting them for board action.

Later the board convened a closed session citing a statutory exemption under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act for discussion of personnel matters. Miss Johnson read a certification resolution that the closed session complied with state law, and board members recorded affirmative votes on that certification.

Following certification, the board moved to uphold the superintendent’s recommendation regarding employee number E121125A; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The meeting record does not disclose details of the personnel action; the board entered and certified the closed session consistent with the statement read aloud during the meeting.

The board also approved the consent agenda and concluded committee reports and member remarks before adjourning.
