During the July 10 Northlake Town Council meeting, the council held a public hearing and then considered a Specific Use Permit request for a roofed cover/awning over an existing accessory structure at 7610 Willow Ridge in the Northridge Estates subdivision.
The applicant, Daryl Bridal, said he purchased the property because the subdivision permitted accessory buildings and sought the cover to protect an RV and other equipment from weather. Multiple neighbors and nearby property owners spoke in favor, noting the structure’s design matches the house and that covered storage would improve neighborhood appearance compared with equipment left exposed. Several speakers said they were building similar structures and had HOA approval.
Opponents and other residents raised a different concern: past developer agreements for the subdivision originally limited accessory buildings and the council had previously allowed exceptions. Those speakers urged either strict application of the developer agreement or a consistent change of rules for all residents.
Councilmembers debated the ordinance’s original intent (maintain a ratio of primary structure to accessory buildings) and the risk of setting a precedent that might allow larger outbuildings in time. Questions from council clarified that the proposed addition is a roof/cover only (not enclosed), that HOA approval had been obtained for this application, and that any future enclosure would require additional permits. After discussion a motion to deny failed and a motion to approve passed; the mayor announced the motion carried and the applicant was granted the SUP.
