Residents and staff to study signal timing after gate installed at Yester Oaks exit

A petition asking the city to change the traffic signal duration at the Airport Boulevard exit for Yester Oaks apartments prompted city staff to outline a data-driven response. Kevin Johnson asked the council to lengthen the light on the Airport Boulevard side at the apartments’ exit.
Staff explained that an emergency-only gate was recently erected on the north apartment exit to South Claridge Road. Traffic operations staff (Miss White and traffic personnel) said they will first place staff in the field for temporary, on-site adjustments, then gather several weeks of traffic counts to measure system impacts, and finally coordinate timing changes with adjacent signals to preserve overall corridor flow. Staff cautioned initial counts should be delayed until drivers stop reacting to the new gate so the data are not skewed.
Council members asked whether residents and apartment owners had been notified; staff said the apartment owner had sent notices. Members also asked about similar retiming work on Moffett Road and at the I-65 interchange; staff confirmed a citywide retiming program is in progress that is retiming dozens of intersections per week with consultants performing computer and field adjustments. No binding directive or final timing change was recorded at the pre-meeting; staff will gather data and report back.
