Commission hears community updates: van-pool check, schools' 'Big Read' and Longview dedication

County and community officials used the March meeting to brief commissioners on local programs and events.

Transportation: Debbie Henry of the TMA Group presented a $23,183.80 check representing van-replacement and depreciation fees for the period July–December 2007 and reported $356,977.29 has been paid to the county to date through the van-pool program; she said the fleet serves 411 riders and reduces vehicle miles traveled (SEG 716–SEG 723). County staff explained that van purchases are funded through rider fees, state reimbursements and proceeds from auctioning retired vans, so the program does not impose ongoing county-tax costs (SEG 2539–SEG 2553).

Education and literacy: Dr. Rebecca Sharber, director of Williamson County Schools, described Franklin's 'Big Read' citywide literacy program and said the district has distributed copies of The Maltese Falcon to high-school students and planned related events through May (SEG 1178–SEG 1202). Sharber also reiterated that spring break is next week and updated the commission on textbook purchasing timing and the district's decision to delay a policy change on early textbook purchases this year (SEG 1239–SEG 1260).

Parks and recreation: Doug Hood announced a Longview Community Center dedication on April 12 and invited commissioners; he reported that two juveniles were arrested for vandalism at the center and estimated the damage at about $10,000 while noting final costs are still being determined for prosecution (SEG 1336–SEG 1410).

What happens next: The van-pool procurement and grant reimbursement processes will continue and the county will proceed with events and facility repairs and follow-up as needed; staff will report back to committees or the full commission where appropriate.
