Board of Education representatives had raised concerns about calendar conflicts, fiscal impacts and local calendar autonomy. After discussion Council Vice President Juando moved and the council voted to hold the county’s position until the Board of Education takes a formal position.
WSSC bill: Staff detailed significant amendments to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission bill, including adding the county DEP director as a commission member, requiring a long-range comprehensive financial plan, strengthening inspector-general independence and requiring triennial external peer reviews. Monica Martina, WSSC’s government-affairs director, said the commission has not taken a formal position but is continuing negotiations on the Avenel coordinating committee provision and language related to ad valorem tax reporting. A council member moved to record support but no second was taken and the item was held pending further information and continued intergovernmental negotiation.
MC1125 (common ownership communities): Council member Mink reported constituent concerns about governance and volunteer recruitment, particularly from Leisure World; staff said Delegate Spiegel (sponsor) is working on amendments. Mink moved to change the council’s position from 'held with support' to an explicit 'hold' and the council voted unanimously to make that change.
