Pensacola ARB approves Generac generator at 99 South Alcony with screening to be resolved

Auxiliary Power Systems requested approval to install a stationary Generac emergency generator at 99 South Alcony Street. Ralph Rooker told the board the electrical service location drove the chosen site and that applicants aimed to hide the unit behind existing concrete while preserving nearby palm trees when possible.

Staff told the board that the city’s Land Development Code requires screening of certain uses within historic districts and that utility facilities, such as generators, are generally subject to screening with fencing or landscaping; staff offered an abbreviated review option to resolve the fencing and materials quickly.

Applicants said updated, on‑site measurements showed the two palm trees originally listed for removal did not need to be removed. Board members discussed locating the unit to avoid blocking windows, options for screening the generator and nearby electrical panels, and whether the installed unit could later be upsized if the owner elected to provide generation for the entire building.

A board member moved to approve the application with the condition the palms be retained where feasible, removal of a shrub to place the generator as indicated, and that screening of appropriate landscape character be resolved through an abbreviated review; the motion was seconded and carried.

Staff also clarified that abbreviated review is an internal, short process handled by staff and two board members, typically completed in about a week. Final fencing and screening materials will be processed through that path before permits are issued.
