Carlos, a city staff member, asked the council to approve a 2026 application to the Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant program to replace playground equipment at Wright Park and to authorize the city’s required match. "I'm here to ask for the approval of the 2026 Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant," Carlos said, noting the program applies only to playground equipment and requires a 50 percent local match in Weber County.
Council members examined the proposed design and scope. Carlos said the work would include demolition of existing equipment, installation of new play structures (including a wood-and-rope feature similar to Warner Park), swings, replacement of the surface to roughly 15 inches of new material, and minor engineering contingency. He said the staff‑read request to the grant program was $85,280 and estimated modest recurring staff time for yearly playground upkeep.
Council asked whether a basketball court could be included; staff responded that this grant is limited to playground equipment and that separate funds or projects would be used for court repairs. Councilmembers generally supported advancing the project ahead of the five‑year plan because matching funds had been identified.
A councilmember moved to approve the application and city contribution match, a motion was seconded, and the measure passed by voice vote. The mayor asked staff to keep the council informed on timing as the project develops. The application deadline was stated as Feb. 28; staff will return with schedule and contract details as they become available.
