Sarasota County to remove railroad trestle on Legacy Trail to improve Phillippi Creek flow

Jason Brown, operations and maintenance with the Sarasota County Stormwater Department, said the county will remove a railroad trestle on the Legacy Trail just north of Bay Vista beginning in late January or early February. "We're going to remove this railroad trestle beginning in late January, early February," Brown said, and added that the time to complete the job should be "approximately 30 days."
Brown said crews will work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and that nearby residents "may hear some of the noise from the trucks or the excavators or the cranes" while the work proceeds. The department is coordinating with the county's parks and recreation staff and natural resources team to keep impacts to a minimum, he said.
The Stormwater Department framed the removal as a stormwater-management and safety measure. Brown said the trestle is not in good condition and that removing it now would reduce the risk of larger damage if the structure were to fail in a storm. He also said removing the trestle and its piles will help stop vegetation buildup that can cause backups in Phillippi Creek and impede water flow.
