Commission approves renovations and ADA upgrades for Alternative Concept Care Services building

The Natchitoches Historic District Commission approved exterior work and accessibility improvements at the building leased by Alternative Concept Care Services, authorizing the applicant to begin renovations subject to submission of porch and new-structure drawings.
Michael Thompson, owner of Alternative Concept Care Services, told the commission he has leased the portion of the complex formerly known as the Optimum building and plans interior renovations, ADA upgrades, and exterior repairs. Thompson said he intends to replace many of the building’s windows to match the historic 6-over-6 look where practicable, move a handicap ramp to the rear for better access, replace rotten decking with Trex-style material, repair the roof, and refresh gutters and grates.
Commissioners raised preservation concerns about maintaining the appearance of original windows but acknowledged the high cost of true wood sashes. Staff and commissioners said modern vinyl windows that visually replicate wood could be acceptable if properly trimmed to match the original appearance. The commission required drawings and material details for the proposed porch/roof extension before the new fixture work could be finalized.
A motion to approve the application (moved by Robinson, seconded by Horton) passed by voice vote. Thompson was told to coordinate with his contractor (Mike Carson / Lambright Construction) and to consult with the state fire marshal about occupancy and restroom requirements before full occupancy and use changes are made.
The commission’s approval authorizes the exterior work described in the packet; Thompson must submit final drawings for the porch/roof extension and any new structural work prior to construction of those elements.
