The Natchitoches Historic District Commission voted to allow demolition of an ancillary rear structure at 208 Poet Street, saying the small outbuilding is not significant to the primary historic house and is in poor condition.
Devonya Price, a realtor representing the owner, told commissioners the building is “definitely newer, but still not brand new” and that contractor quotes to renovate the structure were prohibitively expensive. Commissioner discussion focused on the structure’s condition and its lack of architectural significance to the property. One commissioner described the rear building as “hazardous and dangerous.”
Unidentified Speaker 3 moved to permit demolition limited to the back building; the motion was seconded and commissioners voted in favor. The commission recorded that any replacement structure proposed for the site would need to return to the commission for approval, and staff noted the new building would be treated as a brand-new structure in the historic district review process.
Price confirmed that paint color would remain the same as previously approved and that work to clean the site and rock the driveway is underway. Commissioners reminded the owner to post proper signage and provide tenant parking instructions for the rental property.
The commission’s approval applies only to the rear noncontributing structure; the main house remains subject to historic-district standards and any future exterior changes to the primary building would require separate review.
