Council questions insurer’s timeline after cybersecurity disclosure

Councilmember Caleb Johnson on Dec. 10 pressed the city manager on the timeline of a recent cybersecurity incident, asking whether the city’s insurance provider delayed notifying the city after discovering that sensitive information had been exposed.
"It sounded like maybe at the time the insurance company had found out about it Oct. 30, and it took a number of weeks for us to be notified," Johnson said, noting the city learned more information only weeks later. He asked the administration to confirm whether the insurer had withheld timeline information.
City Manager Joseph J. Dennon said the insurer assembled a list of affected records and the administration is working through that list to identify living residents and remove deceased persons before notices are sent. Dennon told the council: "To make sure I answer accurately, I will confirm with them and then talk to you." He added that reviewing and verifying the list may take additional time.
The council flagged the delay as a communication concern and requested a firm timeline. Dennon agreed to follow up with the insurer and provide an update at the next meeting.
Next steps: Council requested the city manager confirm whether the insurer first discovered the exposure on Oct. 30 and when the city was notified, and to report back at the next regular meeting.
