Red Cross launches Northern Arizona chapter focus on Bullhead City; seeks local partnerships

Bullhead City — Henning Larson, executive director of the newly re-formed Northern Arizona chapter of the American Red Cross, told the Bullhead City Council on Jan. 20 that the chapter plans to focus fiscal year 2027 attention on Bullhead City and nearby communities.
Larson described the chapter’s mission and local programming, including shelter simulations, disaster action team training and home-fire preparedness. “The mission of the Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors,” Larson told the council. He said the chapter has achieved a 100% local volunteer responder rate in Mohave County and has increased local volunteers by 330% since he arrived.
Larson outlined two main approaches: training “clubhouses” that host local classes and community resilience collaborations that pair listening tours with a second year of action to deliver resources. He said the Red Cross does not receive federal, state, county or city funding and relies on donor dollars but is seeking legitimacy and partner support from local elected leaders.
Council members asked about local contact points and the chapter’s relationship with FEMA; Larson said the Red Cross assists but does not work for FEMA and that a national 1-800 number will route callers to local staff. Larson left business cards and urged the city to consider a March proclamation for Red Cross Month to help establish a local presence.
The council received the presentation and had follow-up questions about CPR training and local coordination; no formal action was taken during the meeting.
