The Dental Board of California approved an updated Table of Permitted Dental Auxiliary Duties (CCR title 16 §1068) on Nov. 7, moving the document forward for distribution and posting after a recommendation from the Dental Assisting Council.
Staff explained the updated table incorporates changes from the recently enacted sunset bill (SB 1453) and clarifies what dental auxiliaries — including dental assistants and RDAs in extended functions — may perform under dentist supervision. The council had recommended the table earlier in the day and the board moved and seconded the motion to approve it for distribution.
During public comment, dentists asked about practical limits on tools for newly authorized tasks such as coronal polish (for example, whether use is limited to rubber‑cup polishing vs. use of air abrasion or ultrasonics). Board staff and members replied that once a duty is authorized and the assistant completes any required coursework, the supervising dentist determines which instruments the assistant is competent to use. The board also discussed the application of monitoring sensors for sedation duties and reiterated that supervisory discretion applies.
The motion to approve the table passed by recorded vote. Staff will post the table and guidance for dentists on supervision and training requirements.
