Dolton resident promotes adult mental health first aid classes through Envision Unlimited

Angela Russell, a Dolton resident and representative of Envision Unlimited, used the meeting's public comment period to describe recent adult mental health first aid training and to announce upcoming classes and workshops.
Russell said about 30 people participated in the program's January sessions and that "3 people were adult residents." She described the course, saying, "Adult mental health first aid teaches individuals how to support people who may be experiencing mental health or substance abuse distress." "It does not teach you how to be a therapist, but rather recognize the signs and symptoms, be able to be a support person," she added.
The adult mental health first aid course is designed to help community members identify signs of mental distress and substance use, ask about supports, and connect people to resources. Russell said Envision Unlimited plans its next adult mental health first aid class in March at Flossmoor Community Church and that flyers with registration details have been left at the meeting's front desk.
Russell thanked Trustee Keona Belcher for sponsoring participants for the classes and said Envision Unlimited will meet with Trustee Belcher about rejoining the neighboring resource hub. She said the organization aims to offer a series of about eight workshops, possibly weekly, for Dolton residents in the fall.
