Amherst County moves to advertise first reading of town-precinct ordinance

Elections staff told the Amherst County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 3 that the county will introduce an ordinance creating a precinct coterminous with the town’s municipal boundaries to eliminate the need for two ballot styles at the courthouse precinct.
“Currently, we have two ballot scanners. We have additional poll books already in our possession, so there's no purchases that need to be made,” the elections presenter said, but added that a polling location had not been finalized. Staff said it had reached out to Emmanuel Methodist Church and that the Town Council meeting room was an alternate that meets ADA requirements.
Board member Mister Pew moved that staff advertise a public hearing on the ordinance for Feb. 17, 2026; the motion passed on a voice vote. Board discussion emphasized that the change aims to streamline polling and reduce confusion for voters and poll workers during town elections.
The ordinance was presented as a first reading; staff told the board the final ordinance will return for adoption after the public-hearing process and confirmation of a polling site.
