LATC posts retired CSE items to PSI handbook, highlights near-miss exam performance and outreach to schools

LATC's program manager reported progress on exam materials and outreach efforts and presented data showing many candidates narrowly miss passing the California supplemental exam (CSE).
Kim McDaniel said OPEZ provided retired CSE questions that will be included in the PSI candidate handbook instead of developing a full paid practice exam, which staff said would have materially increased test-development costs. "They provided us some retired exam questions that will be in the next version of the PSI handbook," Kim said; the items will give candidates examples of question types without requiring LATC to fund an expensive practice exam.
Program staff noted outreach visits to UC Davis and other California schools to increase awareness of licensure requirements. The program report included tabled exam data: in 2024, there were 38 CSE retakes, 32 by California candidates and 6 by out-of-state candidates; staff showed how many candidates were within one point of passing, indicating a group of near-miss test-takers that could benefit from targeted preparation resources.
Committee members asked about exam content areas with lower pass rates, including grading, drainage and stormwater management, and requested additional retake success-rate data by exam section. Staff agreed to request those cross-tabulated results from the exam vendor and provide candidates with the PSI handbook link so LATC members can review the retired-item samples.
What happens next: staff will post or share the PSI handbook link with committee members, and will collect and provide more detailed pass/fail and retake analytics by exam subtopic at a future meeting.
