Trustee reports uptick in Dolton break-ins; police report lists 2,333 calls in January

Trustee Belcher reported community safety concerns at a Dolton trustee meeting, saying neighbors and local businesses have seen recent break-ins and that the village plans to study lighting on Sibley after a darkness-related accident.

“The police and fire commission will meet on 02/11/2026 at 6:00 PM,” Trustee Belcher said, inviting residents to attend. She said an engineer flagged an accident on Sibley and that Police Chief Chapman will begin surveys examining lighting and safety on that corridor.

Reading a statement from Police Chief Chapman, Trustee Belcher said the department responded to 2,333 calls for service during January 2026 (through Jan. 31). The report listed 433 parking tickets, 150 state tickets, 2,318 red light tickets, four felony arrests, 31 misdemeanor arrests and four warrants issued. The figures were presented as part of the chief’s monthly activity report.

Trustee Belcher urged residents and business owners to take precautions. “If your doors are open, please make sure you lock your doors,” she said, adding that some car break-ins have involved only loose change. She also noted increased police visibility on village streets and mentioned neighboring communities Crestwood and Calumet City as facing similar issues.

No fire report was given at the meeting; Trustee Belcher closed the segment by thanking Chief Curtis.

The Police and Fire Commission meeting on Feb. 11 is expected to further address lighting and safety surveys for Sibley and related enforcement or infrastructure recommendations.
