Summary
The commission approved Jan. 6 minutes, heard that four lateral and about 41 regular applications have been received for patrol openings, and agreed to host IPSP on May 12 to help finalize interview questions and assist candidate selection.
The Franklin City Police Merit Commission on Feb. 3 approved minutes from its Jan. 6 meeting and heard an update on recruitment and a contract matter.
A department representative told the commission the department received four lateral applications (the lateral deadline was Feb. 3) and "about 41" applications through the regular process, with nine of those applicants having completed follow-up documentation. The representative said the regular-application deadline is Feb. 27.
"It looks like we have about 41 people so far who have turned in applications for the regular process," the staff member said. The numbers, the presenter added, are "encouraging" compared with recent history.
Commissioners also reviewed a contract with IPSP previously authorized at a prior meeting. The commission attorney said the only change needed in the contract was a correction to the date and that no additional vote was required. He brought the corrected contract for signatures and said IPSP will come to help develop interview questions and assist with selecting candidates.
"Once they are under contract, they're going to be coming down to go over the interview questions to help select them," the attorney said. He said IPSP (contact "Lindsay") is available April 7 or May 12, and the commission agreed on May 12, noting that the May meeting falls on the second Tuesday and the group may meet an hour earlier if needed.
Procedural items completed at the start of the meeting included the roll call (Doctor Schafer, Joe Allen and Josh Shenafelt present; Les Tabling absent) and approval of the Jan. 6 minutes after a motion by Joe Allen and a second by Josh Shenafelt. With no further business, the commission adjourned.
Next steps: the commission will proceed with the IPSP-led interview-question session and candidate-selection work on May 12, and the regular applicant deadline remains Feb. 27.
