Bullhead City council on Jan. 20 voted unanimously to approve a four‑year appointment agreement with local attorney Rod C. Gillio to serve as city magistrate, with the contract beginning Jan. 25, 2026 and carrying a starting annual salary of $160,000.
City staff said magistrate Richard Spear had resigned and a short search led to the recommended candidate. Gillio, who identified himself as a deputy county attorney with a long prosecutorial career in Mohave County, told the council he grew up in the county and is eager to serve in Bullhead City if approved.
Speakers from the public and county government praised Gillio's experience: Supervisor Rich Lettman described Gillio as "outstanding" and highly ethical; others, including family members and a former board member who sat on the interview panel, endorsed the hire. Counsel and the mayor expressed confidence he will be a valuable addition to the local justice system.
Council moved to approve the appointment; the clerk read a roll call that the motion passed with seven votes in favor.
Staff noted the contract had been reviewed by the city attorney and prepared by human resources; Gillio indicated he was ready to sign the agreement.
The council did not take other personnel action at the meeting.
