The Mount Healthy City School District board on July 19 approved an agreement with Cincinnati Bell to install a Fioptics “smart city” Wi‑Fi system throughout areas of the Mount Healthy City School District, funded by a $400,000 donation.
District staff said the donation will pay for installation and that work should take about 60 days. The pilot will provide public Wi‑Fi access to residents across the district; staff said the network can be configured to block content that violates district policy and to present a landing page with district information and event notices. A small portion of the district (area near the old Rinks building) will be included in phase 2 because additional Fioptics must be laid to reach it.
The motion to authorize the agreement was moved by Mr. Kilgore and seconded by Mrs. Ellis. Miss Bryant recused herself from the vote; the remaining board members voted to approve the agreement.
Board members and staff framed the project as a step toward closing the digital‑access gap for students and residents in the Mount Healthy City School District. Staff said the district had earlier considered paying with ESSER funds but will use the donation instead. The district thanked the city of Mount Healthy for its partnership on the effort.
Next steps: staff will finalize the agreement with Cincinnati Bell and begin installation, with a phased rollout described by district staff. The board will not revisit the vote unless contract terms change substantially.
