Dental Assisting Council recommends board approve updated table of delegated duties under SB 1453

The Dental Assisting Council recommended that the Dental Board of California approve an updated table of delegated duties that clarifies which tasks supervising dentists may assign to dental auxiliaries after changes made by the sunset bill SB 1453.
Tina Valerie, chief of license and program compliance, told the council the table (pages 36–45 of the meeting materials) organizes allowable duties by assistant type and indicates whether each task requires direct or general supervision and whether a specific course is required. Valerie said the table draws on provisions in the sunset bill and the California Code of Regulations.
Tracy Montez, executive officer, said staff identified areas where both the general- and direct-supervision boxes are checked and that future legislative cleanup may be necessary to clarify those items. Montez said, "Where we see that both of the boxes are checked, it will again ultimately come down to the dentist." She encouraged stakeholders to submit feedback to help staff prioritize any cleanup.
A motion to recommend board approval was made and seconded by Joanne Pacheco. Marella Turan called the roll and recorded the following votes: Epps Robbins — aye; Fowler — aye; Gerlach — aye; Miyazaki — aye; Palagi — aye; Pacheco — aye; Smith — aye. The motion passed.
Stakeholder representatives who addressed the council during public comment urged timely clarifications. Melody Randolph, representing the Alliance, said the revised table "is needed" but encouraged the board to address confusing entries "as quickly as possible" to avoid practitioner confusion. Sherry Becker, also representing the Alliance, thanked the council and Pacheco for her service.
Next steps: staff will gather stakeholder feedback and bring any needed clarifying language or legislative recommendations forward; the council's recommendation will be presented to the full Dental Board for final action.
