Board presses staff on cleanup, pavement hazard and blocked sidewalks ahead of marathon

Board members used the Jan. 26 meeting to press staff for near-term maintenance work ahead of a weekend marathon and to highlight public-safety concerns.
Chair described a parcel between “lynches and bees” that he said was littered and urged staff to arrange cleanup so the marathon route would present better to visitors. He also raised a pavement issue at the stormwater inlet on 1st Street at 3rd Avenue North, calling it a ‘‘real trip hazard’’ in the middle of the road and asking whether public works could address the inlet and the bonus tied to its contractor.
Taylor said she would reach out to property owners, parks and administration to explore options and emphasized the constraint that city crews cannot undertake maintenance on private property without permission: "I will reach out to the property owners... and see if we can offer some something to get done." On the pavement issue, the chair asked public works to provide an update at an upcoming meeting; Taylor said she would confirm scheduling for that item.
Speaker 3 also reported that dumpsters were lined up three abreast, blocking the sidewalk in front of the Spring Hill hotel; board members said the dumpsters often sit out for hours after pickup. Taylor said she was texting about the problem during the meeting and would follow up.
Other operational suggestions included repainting the Jack’s Beach signs using art committee funds and confirming the Beach Boulevard landscaping schedule. Staff committed to following up and reporting back to the board at future meetings.
