Story County plans modest rent increase for group homes after renovations; Mary Greeley praised maintenance

Story County facilities staff said Feb. 5 they plan to increase rents for three county-owned group homes after years of upgrades and maintenance.
"This is rent and utilities for our group homes," Joby Brogdon said, describing the three properties (Calhoun, Duluth and Hazel) and noting this would be the first rate increase since the county began leasing them. Brogdon explained the county pays utilities for Calhoun and Duluth and back-bills tenants (Optime Services), while Mary Greeley Medical Center holds the lease and utility responsibility for the Hazel property.
Supervisor Linda Merkin relayed that a Mary Greeley staff member who works with the Hazel Group Home was "very complimentary about the maintenance" and asked the board to pass along the praise. Brogdon also described planned repairs—sidewalk and concrete work at Hazel, shower-pan replacements where off-the-shelf pans deteriorated, and a parking-lot replacement at Duluth—which he said justify the modest rent adjustment.
Auditor staff raised and clarified a tax-status question from an Ames assessor, with the group noting the rented group-home properties are not tax-exempt because they are leased to outside operators. Facilities staff said more detailed net-revenue questions from the assessor should be directed to the auditor's office.
