After presentations by the applicant and county staff, the hearing moved to public comment where more than a dozen residents and local business owners spoke in favor of the CPD rezoning for the Blue Dog.
Speakers included local residents and organization leaders who emphasized the restaurant’s role in Matlacha’s post‑hurricane recovery and community life. Aaron Beretta (resident), Erin Lawler Lambert (executive director, Greater Pine Island Alliance), Dave Connor (president, Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce), and John Lynch (Blue Dog owner) all said the Blue Dog has served as a community hub, hosting recovery meetings, charity events and providing local jobs. Several speakers described long‑standing patron behavior they said supports pedestrian access and shared parking rather than exclusive reliance on on‑site spaces.
Nearby property owner Eric Seifert (RE/MAX) said his lot provides parking to Blue Dog customers under an informal agreement and that his lot typically has spare capacity because his peak hours run counter to the restaurant’s. Multiple civic association representatives (Kathleen Walsh, Carol Scott, others) said they have not experienced parking‑related driveway blockages and urged the examiner to approve deviations that recognize Matlacha’s historic, pedestrian character.
Public comment was uniformly supportive at the Feb. 5 hearing; the examiner left the record open for technical corrections and staff and applicant follow‑up.
