Casa Grande Youth Commission showcases year of service, plans Washington, D.C. trip

The Casa Grande Youth Commission presented a year-in-review at the City Council study session, showing a recap video of volunteer work and events and outlining upcoming activities. Vice Chair Reese Maeseses opened the presentation and said commissioners had volunteered at events including a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a community shredding event.
"This kind of showcases our journey throughout the commission," Kendra, the commission's Public Information Officer, said while introducing a video that captured community-service projects and social events. Commissioners described service at the McCartney Ranch Fall Festival, running booths and helping with setup and cleanup, and participation at a concert event featuring a suite provided by APS.
Chair Sawyer Barth said the commission plans to send several commissioners to Washington, D.C., and that "we scheduled a meeting with Senator Ruben Gallego" to discuss leadership and community service from a youth perspective. The commissioners said the trip will give students a chance to learn about civic leadership and to represent Casa Grande on a national stage.
Members also described local programs: a January retreat where officers were elected and the commission set expectations; a scholarship called Heart of Casa Grande that awards three $500 prizes for video, art and essay contests judged by community members; and a recurring 'day of shredding' community event. A commissioner announced the next shredding event will be April 25, 9 a.m.–noon at First American Credit Union.
Adviser Matt Herman thanked the students and noted that commissioners (not advisers) decide membership and who attends events. Mayor Lisa Fitzgibbons and other council members praised the students' volunteer work and told seniors to stay connected to Casa Grande.
The commission reported raising $1,428 from donations at a recent shredding event (transcript phrase appears as "1000 $428") and emphasized that the program gives students leadership experience and exposure to city government. The council closed the youth segment with thanks and encouragement for continued civic involvement.
