Pensacola public divided over Drag Queen Christmas as residents urge council to cancel or defend event

"If the mayor, the city attorney, and the council refuse to do the right thing and cancel this raw affront to Christianity… I would ask the council to consider that we are dealing with false advertising," one speaker said.
Others defended the performers and the holiday event. Stephen McCollum said he attended a drag holiday performance and described it as family-friendly and respectful of the Christmas season: "It was a really, really good show." Another supporter told the council the production included tributes to classical holiday works and honored veterans.
The council did not take direct action on the show during the Dec. 11 meeting; public comment and debate were confined to the Leroy Boyd forum. City officials have previously argued that the First Amendment limits the council’s ability to cancel contracted events, and speakers on both sides referenced legal and financial implications.
What happens next: No formal vote or ordinance was pending Dec. 11. The council heard public sentiment and will take no immediate regulatory action during that meeting; any future action would need to be brought back to the council agenda.
