The fiscal officer told council members the two pieces of legislation are follow-ups required by the county to submit renewal questions for an 8-mill road levy and a general fund levy. "So there are 2, 2 pieces of legislation in front of you," the fiscal officer said when introducing the measures and asked council to move them to the ballot.
Why it matters: the fiscal officer said the village will lose about $109,000 annually after a planned Little Amity fire rescue separation takes effect, which would further strain fire funding that the fiscal officer described as already underfunded. "We only collect about $580,000 for it from the fire levy. Fire services cost about 680," the fiscal officer said, and warned the village could not responsibly absorb a larger gap without action. The officer also stressed time sensitivity: "The deadline is tomorrow," they said, explaining staff only learned of the county auditor’s deadline after previous late meetings.
Council procedure and votes: After adopting the agenda and excusing the absent member, council agreed to read both measures by title only and proceeded to vote. The presiding officer moved to pass resolution 2026-6 (the road levy) and a roll-call vote was taken: Mister Baron — yes; Mister Fisher — yes; Miss Chesser/Chester — absent; Doctor Fisher — yes; Miss Primer — yes; Mister Michaelson — yes. The council then voted to pass resolution 2026-7 (the general fund levy) by the same recorded affirmative votes. Both motions carried.
What’s next: the fiscal officer said staff will populate missing administrative details in the resolution paperwork for the county auditor. The council also announced upcoming meetings: an executive committee meeting that evening at 7 p.m., and a finance meeting and full council session on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The resolutions will be submitted to the county auditor for inclusion on the ballot per the stated deadline.
