Executive committee to review zoning setbacks and group‑home rules after planning requests

Speaker 4 told the Executive Committee on Feb. 3 that the maintenance and zoning/planning departments are asking the committee to review and rewrite rules around setbacks and to consider rezoning some streets.
"We are going to ask counsel to change up what those rules are on setbacks," Speaker 4 said, adding that the planning commission has submitted requests for variances that the departments believe are symptomatic of larger rules that need revision. Speaker 4 also raised concerns about fraudulent or unregistered group homes and said some residents and staff want stronger penalties or zoning-based registration to address abuses.
Speaker 4 suggested the Executive Committee is a suitable place for those discussions and that different opinions will be expected when the items come forward. No ordinance language was presented at the meeting; Speaker 4 said counsel will be asked to prepare draft language for future executive or council consideration.
