Fairfield Township updates statutory language, adopts corrected fire-levy resolution

Fairfield Township trustees on Feb. 3 adopted Resolution No. 26-19 to correct statutory wording in a previously approved fire levy so the Board of Elections will accept it.

The correction, presented by the township clerk, addresses language requested by the county prosecutor's office after the township's earlier filing was returned. The resolution affirms the board's determination to proceed with levying an additional tax in excess of the 10-mill limitation for the fire levy.

Clerk Kim Lipinski told trustees the paperwork had been returned by elections staff and that the prosecutor's office provided a list of required statutory phrases to include. "We recently submitted paperwork to the Board of Elections after the last January meeting, and it was returned to us," the clerk said, explaining the purpose of the amendment.

A trustee moved to adopt the resolution and a second was recorded. The board took roll-call votes that resulted in recorded 'Yes' responses from Maccabee, Hargamire and Burden; the chair announced the resolution adopted. The action only updates statutory language; the trustees said the substantive levy had been adopted previously in January and this meeting merely corrected the text for resubmission.

A motion to adjourn the special meeting followed and passed; the board immediately proceeded into an emergency meeting to address related police-levy language.
