Tree Board plans Arbor Day, Earth Day giveaway and community outreach; forester honored

The Michigan City Tree Board on Feb. 4 confirmed an Arbor Day proclamation signed by the mayor and laid out community outreach plans including an Earth Day tree giveaway on April 25 and a farmers-market tree giveaway on May 2.
Board members discussed staffing and volunteer recruitment for both events, suggested a short handout with planting instructions and a QR code linking to the tree-request form, and noted that about 440 trees are on order to be distributed. Members said water and maintenance capacity is a limiting factor for planting and urged careful selection of planting sites.
The board also congratulated City Forester Phil Graff on receiving a merit/service award from the Indiana Arborist Association at its January meeting; Graff said he appreciated the recognition and will share a photo of the plaque for the board’s social channels.
Board volunteers agreed to recruit helpers through the board’s Facebook page and to prepare handouts with planting instructions sourced from the Arbor Day Foundation. The chair said the board will confirm volunteers and logistics ahead of the events.
