Board hears detailed terminal and airfield project updates as opening approaches

Airport leadership updated the board on progress as the new terminal nears opening, outlining construction finishes, new systems and operational planning.
Speaker 3, delivering the director’s report, highlighted new jet bridges, polished terrazzo floors and a new TSA screening checkpoint, and said the design includes water-hyacinth petals with an informational display planned for the terminal. "First time ever, obviously, that they've that we've had jet bridges at Hilton Head," the director said while reviewing progress inside and outside the building.
Steve (Speaker 8), who provided the projects update, said staff are assembling spare parts lists and training plans for jet-bridge operations and common-use systems. He reported the uAvionics surveillance equipment has been delivered and fiber has been run; Steve said scheduling 1–2 days for installation and controller training is pending. "I sent out an email Friday confirming we have all the equipment for that has been delivered," Steve said.
Operational items under way include a parking study after a vendor’s preliminary check found roughly 78 cars on site but only about 18 paid in the system, prompting plans for temporary gates and a review of permanent gate placement to recover revenue. Steve also reported the Buford Executive runway rehab is complete except for pavement markings pending favorable weather and that consultants are working toward design and geotechnical work for a parallel taxiway extension expected to be bid in 2027 and paid for with grant funding.
On tower work, Steve described cab renovations to support upgraded communications equipment and the addition of an on-post restroom for controllers; the cab can support two positions though it typically operates with one. Staff said they will continue coordination with FAA and peer airports on common-use systems and wargaming operations before opening. The board did not take a vote on these items but asked clarifying operational questions and thanked staff for the reports.
