District outlines construction bids, reports Flagview boiler failure and sets budget workshop date
Summary
The Elko County School District reported planned bids for the Wells High School gym roof and a mechanical upgrade at Jackpot High School, progress on the Owyhee project, and a Flagview boiler failure that closed school for a day; a public budget workshop will precede the Feb. 17 board meeting.
District staff and the board provided a facilities and construction update at the Feb. 3 meeting in Spring Creek.
The district said it is preparing to put the Wells High School gym roof replacement out to bid and plans to seek board permission to go to bid for a mechanical/heating system upgrade at Jackpot High School. The Owyhee project was described as progressing faster than expected after a mild winter. The meeting also covered an unexpected Flagview boiler failure that forced the school to lose a day of instruction; Schneider Mechanical and district maintenance staff worked over the weekend to repair the system and bring the school back online the following Monday.
The presenter emphasized that capital-improvement funds are restricted to capital purposes and cannot be used to address the general-fund budget shortfall. The district reiterated that capital and general funds are separate and subject to rules about allowable uses.
Next steps: the district will seek board permission to go to bid on planned capital projects and will present budget-subcommittee recommendations and district leadership recommendations at a public budget workshop scheduled to precede the Feb. 17 board meeting.
