Taft police report: 893 incidents and 63 arrests in January

Chief Damon McMinn presented the Taft Police Department’s January activity report during the Feb. 3 council meeting, giving a snapshot of calls, enforcement and staffing.
McMinn reported 893 total incidents for the city in January, including 339 calls for service and 554 officer-initiated calls. He said officers conducted 47 traffic stops and logged 507 other incidents, described as patrol checks and community-oriented activity. The department wrote 134 cases during the month.
The chief reported 63 total arrests in January — 48 misdemeanors and 15 felonies — and credited dispatch and patrol teams while noting the dispatch center is currently short-staffed because an employee is on leave.
Council members asked practical questions about jurisdiction and emergency reporting. In response, staff advised residents to call dispatch or 911 to determine whether an address falls inside city limits. One speaker summarized a local street-sign convention: "If your street sign is green, you're in the county. If it's white and black, you're in the city." City staff noted that the color rule does not cover every case and recommended calling dispatch for uncertain situations.
No council action or policy change resulted from the report; it was received for information.
