Treasurer reported 171,000 meals served year-to-date (up from 164,000), revenue of $432,000 and a year-to-date food-service loss of $175,000; board was told a transfer from the general fund may be requested soon to stabilize the program.
Treasurer (presenting the food-service report) told the Fairfield Union Local board that food-service year-to-date activity is up compared with last year but the program remains in a deficit position.
The treasurer said the district has served 171,000 meals so far this year compared with 164,000 the prior year. Year-to-date food-service revenue was $432,000 compared with $396,000 the previous year; expenses were $260,000 versus $233,000 a year earlier. Labor and fringe costs were $307,000 compared with $330,000 the prior year. The year-to-date loss for the food-service fund is $175,000, down from a $204,000 loss last year. The fund balance at the end of January was $132,000.
The treasurer told the board staff expect to request a partial transfer from the general fund at an upcoming meeting (either the next meeting or the first March meeting) to offset the shortfall; the transfer has been planned in multi-year forecasting but has not yet been made. The treasurer said transfers would be staged rather than a single full-year amount up front.
Board members asked for clarification about an item labeled “catering,” and staff explained it includes in-house events (staff breakfasts and similar) and occasionally invoiced work for outside groups, which can make the line appear as both expense and revenue on different documents.
