South Plainfield honors fall athletes and spotlights student greenhouse, club work

The South Plainfield Board of Education recognized fall student-athletes, heard presentations from the Environmental Science Club about its greenhouse program, and received a student representative update.
Superintendent (opening remarks) invited Interim Athletic Director to the podium and the board presented certificates to athletes who earned division, conference and county recognition across girls volleyball, boys soccer, cross country, gymnastics and other fall sports. The board read the roster of honorees and acknowledged coaches, including an assistant coach of the year.
Board members then heard from the Environmental Science Club and its advisor. Advisor Kathleen Beddon thanked the board for the opportunity to present and described the greenhouse as an educational space that supports instruction and student well-being. Student presenters described crops grown — including tomatoes, peppers, basil, radishes and beans — and said the greenhouse supplies plants to the culinary program and the community. "The greenhouse has been doing amazing," student Julian Ardis said, adding that the space has helped him and other students reduce stress and learn responsibility.
Freshman class president Stacy Uva updated the board on academic and extracurricular activity, including a new pathway (Accuplacer) for graduation requirements, STAMP testing for biliteracy, upcoming Model UN and debate trips, club fundraisers, and winter sports records. Uva asked the community to attend upcoming athletic events and noted several student achievements across teams.
Board members praised the presentations and encouraged continued support for the greenhouse and student programs. The board noted that student projects and extracurriculars are providing hands-on learning opportunities that intersect with curriculum goals.
The board moved on to business after the presentations; student recognitions and the greenhouse presentation were the primary community-facing items at the start of the meeting.
