Business survey shows small sample; commissioners seek better sector data before public release

The Webster Groves Business District Commission reviewed the third-quarter business survey and agreed it needs additional context—particularly start/end dates and sector breakdowns—before wide distribution.
Commission member Jerry (Speaker 6), who circulated a draft qualitative summation, said the survey produced about "35 to 36 respondents" and recommended adding a short wrap-up that interprets the charts rather than leaving only raw numbers. "When you talk to only 36 people, typically you're talking to the same group," Jerry said, adding that a summation paragraph and a link to the full results would be useful to include in the commission newsletter.
Members suggested the survey should indicate when it was fielded and ask respondents to identify their business sector (retail, services, restaurants, etc.) so future results can be read by category. Commissioners flagged online shopping and rising fixed costs (utilities, insurance, taxes and wages) as recurring qualitative themes that are compressing small-business margins, and discussed how to present those qualitative observations without overstating the limited sample size.
The commission directed staff to provide missing date fields and sector breakdowns where available, to add a short interpretive paragraph for the next newsletter, and to consider routing the raw file to the commission for one more review before publication. No formal policy or program funding changes were made at this meeting.
