WAKULLA COUNTY — The Wakulla County Board unanimously adopted a resolution designating Pierce Cemetery as a local historic site after a short public hearing and a staff recommendation.
County staff described the cemetery as a 0.84-acre, well-maintained site of stone markers and newer marble headstones located north of Strickland Road near Spring Hill Road. "As of September 2025, this cemetery contained 39 graves," staff said, and noted the historic preservation committee reviewed the nomination on Jan. 20, 2026, and recommended approval.
Staff recommended the board select option 1 to adopt the resolution. After a motion and second, commissioners voted "Aye" and the resolution passed unanimously. A commissioner suggested the local historical society assume stewardship or involvement with the property.
The adoption places Pierce Cemetery on the county's local register of historic places; staff did not indicate further county expenditures tied to the designation at the meeting.
