Committee asks staff to break down shelter and field rental fees by park after reviewing comparables

Members of Weston’s Parks & Recreation Committee discussed park shelter fees and field rental rates on Feb. 23, 2026, after staff provided a table of current rates and comparables from neighboring communities.
Staff said the village’s current family shelter rate is $60 with a $25 security deposit and nonresident fees are higher; staff also noted a nonprofit resident rate and business rates in the packet. Staff estimated annual shelter rental revenue at roughly $4,000, and said last year’s revenue was about $3,600. Yellow Banks currently uses portable toilets for the season at a vendor cost of $585 per month for roughly six months.
Committee members compared area practices: some neighboring communities break out facilities by amenity and one local district charges as much as $100 per hour for lighted turf fields. Members recommended staff obtain precise electricity-use or meter-readings for the village’s lighted turf field and to compare two similar communities with turf fields, then return with a simplified spreadsheet.
"I think it's important we're covering our cost, not trying to make money, but to recover staff time and maintenance," a committee member said. The committee voted to direct staff to prepare a park-by-park fee breakdown and bring back field-rental options and energy-cost information at the next meeting.
