Committee approves two school resource officer positions funded with local partners

Captain Steve Baranis, operations captain with the Kenosha County Sheriff's Office, presented a resolution to add two school resource officer (SRO) positions and told the committee that local school districts and the Village of Salem Lakes committed to funding summer coverage. "The Village Of Salem Lakes, the Salem School District, the Silver Lake School District have all committed to funding these positions, which will result in no additional tax levy dollars being requested to support these resource officers," Baranis said.
Baranis said one SRO assignment fills an existing, unfunded position for the Salem School District and the other creates a new full‑time equivalent for the Silver Lake/Riverview assignment. He said the agreements with the school districts are one‑year contracts that do not automatically renew, requiring school board approval each year.
Committee members asked how the county would handle a loss of school funding; Baranis said the sheriff's office would manage staffing through attrition if necessary. Members also identified a numeric typo in the resolution's budget line and directed that the clerical error be corrected prior to finalization.
Supervisor John Morrissey moved the resolution and Supervisor Felix Garcia seconded. The committee voted 'Aye' and the resolution passed.
