Parks staff outline legacy play-area grant, pump track timeline and school vote on playground design

Alyssa Dunn, parks staff, told commissioners that a long-planned legacy play-area project will move into permitting this year and is being broken into multi-year phases. "This is the year that we've been waiting a couple years for," Dunn said, describing a pump track, new playground and related paths and benches.
Dunn said the pump track is expected to be completed by the end of summer and planning for the playground design will begin in the fall. The county will choose two playground options and local elementary students will vote on their preferred design.
Funding for the project is currently described as partially from RCO (the Recreation and Conservation Office) and partly from rural development funds the county applied for last year. Dunn noted the RCO grant cycle can take two to three years between application and award, so work is being phased accordingly.
Staff also said a cultural-resource study is required before any ground disturbance and that study work is underway for the current project phase. Dunn and commissioners discussed other potential park projects and sites — including canoe and kayak launches, a fishing pier idea for Hog Island, and paving a dike path in Lexington that could be eligible for trail funding.
